谷下田朋美は、水戸市近郊にある、ひたちなか市で生まれ育ち、現在も田園風景が広がる自然環境のもとで制作をしています。
同郷の小川芋銭が人生の大半を過ごした茨城県牛久沼の地で、河童をモチーフとした素朴で豊かな水辺の世界を描いたように、
谷下田朋美は、近くを流れる那珂川沿いにある水田、雑木林、小屋や古民家などから立ち上がる匂い、音、光と陰影から作画の
着想を得ています。その空気感が谷下田朋美の作品の通奏低音となっています。また、朽ちた建物や、老木、道端にある錆びた
広告塔や看板に、彼女が幼少の頃から親しんでいる水木しげるの描く世界にある、不可視な「妖気」を感じ取り、作品の物語を作り
上げていきます。その言葉使いは、何か強いメッセージを発する声高で饒舌なものではなく、それは私的な話を聴いてくれる誰かを
じっと待っているような忍耐強く静かなものです。その声を聞き取ることができると、小さい頃に親に読んでもらった童話や、耽読した
小説、途中で投げ出した本など、記憶の深い底にあった各々の「内なる図書館」が立ち現われます。

Tomomi Yageta, born and raised in the Mito City suburb of Hitachinaka City, even today paints her pastoral landscapes surrounded
by nature. In the same Ushikuma, Ibaraki Prefecture that Mokichi Ogawa spent most of his life drawing rustic, rich kappa-esque
waterside motifs, Yageta draws her influence from the sights, sounds, smells and light and shade that stand out from the rice
fields, greenwoods, and the old huts and houses along the nearby flowing Nakagawa River. This atmospheric feeling has become
the basso continuo of Tomomi's artistic work. Her inventive pieces feature decrepit buildings, ancient trees, and rusted roadside
billboards and signs, depicting the invisible “unearthliness” of the world of Mizuki Shigeru, an artist with whom she has been familiar
with since childhood. Rather than loquaciously shouting an overbearing message, she expresses this "unearthliness" patiently, quietly,
speaking to the viewer as if on a personal level. Like childhood memories of a fairy tail read to us by our parents, or an engrossing
novel abandoned halfway through; if you listen to her voice, these images spring to your mind from the depths of the library of your
